Mat Practice is a training in movement and voice. It progresses through fixed sequence of actions on a yoga mat. It synthesizes techniques and processes from Southern Indian hereditary movement forms with vocal practices from European laboratory theatre. The practice’s sequencing begins with floor stretches. It progresses into a cycle of large dynamic body shapes. Vocal centres are then activated through linking breath and movement. In resonant silence, the practice closes with a pattern of detailed gestures. Final actions ensure release and rest. The practice can be done indoors or outside. Its duration without pause is 50 minutes. It can be done in silence or to the accompaniment of live or recorded music. It progresses through varying degrees of inward and outward focus, from careful breath modulation to sudden jumps and kicks. A close rapport is sustained with other movers, but the work is upon oneself.
