Partner Practice is a creative way to explore movement and dance in a group. It uses interconnecting exercises for moving together that gradually help participants to explore a fuller range of potential. It synthesizes techniques and processes from diverse contexts, including Jerzy Grotowski’s laboratory theatre processes, Southern Indian hereditary movement forms and Japanese and Chinese marital arts. The practice’s sequencing interlinks principles from Gabrielle Roth’s five rhythms and Laban’s effort-actions. The practice can be done indoors or outside. Its duration can vary from thirty to ninety minutes. It can be done in silence or to the accompaniment of live or recorded music. It progresses gradually through varying degrees of contact, from fingertips to sharing weight, in a safe and supportive process. A close rapport is sustained by the movers throughout to enable a considerate group experience that gives everyone the space to explore their creative flow.
